Increased Storage thanks to Box Division

April 2008

Within the new distribution warehouse of the Dutch wholesaler of painting equipment Ter Hoeven' the SSI Schaefer Carousel System and a mini-load system have been ensuring the quickest possible order turnover times since they were commissioned in the third quarter of 2006.

Being used as the load carriers are 18,000 LTB containers from the SSI Schaefer plastics range, the 600x400x300mm containers run through the materials flow from incoming goods via the buffer mini-load system to the carousel right through to the picking stations.

The compact storage is increased even further thanks to the division of the boxes into two and four compartments. Even the smallest bulk items are housed economically thanks to the flexible usage of dividers. At the pick-to-tote picking stations, a light beam indicates to the employee the compartment from which the goods should be taken. The boxes are fitted with four barcode labels to facilitate identification and control.

The SSI Schaefer Carousel System (SCS) is now established as a standard system for dynamic paperless order picking with numerous market leaders now using the innovative system solution.

With an automated order-picking process of 1,000 picks per hour, 50 percent more storage compaction and a modular system design, the SCS is an adaptable and intelligent system solution for dynamic order-picking processes with a high performance level and maximum economic efficiency.

The range of Schaefer LTB containers, made from polypropylene, offers particularly high volume utilisation, a standard reinforced base and upper rim, as well as four sturdy cylindrical corners - the LTB is light but strong, ideal for efficient transport and storage of material.

The base variants ensure trouble-free running on all types of conveyor, with features that guarantee a high resistance to twisting and secure stacking. Its weight and strengthened base make maximum loads of up to 50kg possible, whilst the variant with a vibration-welded base (VS01) can take a maximum load of 70kg and runs particularly quiet on conveyors.

SSI Schaefer has designed two lid options for the LTB container - as standard, with a hinged 2-part lid or separate one-piece top cover. The covered containers provide additional security, ready for shipment and retain the ability for use with automatic stacker / de-stacker machinery, also providing secure storage in mini-load and modular shelving systems.
